Self-made has become a status symbol. Due to the critical view at the origins of a product – where and how has it been produced? – combined with the major trend to individuality. self-made products are becoming cool. Long ago are the times when creating your own outfit our furniture was done for economic reasons – nowadays the material for self-made products is more expensive than an average industrial product, but that’s the price people are willing to pay for the experience of doing and creating something with their own hands.

Helsinki Design Week offered this year a series of DIY workshops from recycling your jeans to paper-quilling or food design.

The enthusiasm and creativity one puts in the creation of an object is also very well evident when browsing the platforms for selling hand-made products such as etsy, dawanda or ezebee.
