ROOTS

Roots are becoming more and more important. In times of globalisation people are starting to ask themselves „Where are my roots?“. To stay grounded in an always faster moving world, a rooted attitude is also of great help.

This creates a growing demand of products associated with roots.

Root vegetables are fashionable again, and not only because of their healthy aspect. They are a popular topic for recipe books and food blogs, such as this one from „the hungry goddess“.

The quality assurance label for Italian food DOC – Denominazione di Origine Controllata (controlled designation of origin) – gives their products a higher value by indicating their roots.

This longing for roots has influenced also interior design by using wood as a luxury and design material. Austrian designer Stefan Knopp transforms trees in pure tables, where the structure and character of the tree remains visual.

Already almost mythical is this publicity spot for the eco-friendly cell phone Touch Wood SH-08C,  made from trees that have been culled from overgrown forests in Japan. Also the organic shape in the form of a bean communicates the connection with nature. The Japanese ad agency Drill Inc. put nature and creativity together and came up with this amazing video. A giant wooden xylophone, hand built in the woods of Kyushu, is playing Bach’s Cantata 147 “Joy of Man’s Desiring”, when a ball is rolling down the planks.
